In the last several years, Apple Cottage has experienced major changes in the area of food labeling. Information about the country of origin (the original producer of the food) is no longer obvious as it has been in the past. An item with a Product of Canada label on it actually originates in China and arrives in the country of destination by way of Canada. The consumer has no way to know that a product that appears to be supplied from Canada has actually been produced in China.

The lack of control the average consumer faces is quite troublesome. We are dependent upon a world-wide food system yet we know little or nothing about the quality of the foods or the production methods used. Furthermore, it seems an uphill battle to deal with all the chemicals in our food supply and environment. We cannot get them out of our food and the government is reluctant to act to ban them. It is no wonder the “little guy” is fearful, frustrated and angry. These actions by forces out of our control affect our lives and health daily. For most of us it is not practical to produce our own food. We can certainly grow vegetables and herbs but full-scale food production is beyond our scope.
When it comes to the foods and medicines we put into our bodies, the best approach is a proactive one. Network with local regional farmers and get to know their growing and raising practices. Begin by cultivating relationships with them and exchange ideas and information. Organic farmers are looking to sell their wares and educated consumers are looking for high quality, local healthy foods.
Farmer’s markets are a good place to start. Lots of people in rural areas are starting to raise their own cows and goats, make their own yogurts and cheeses, raise bees and harvest the honey, and other sustainable food, medicine and energy-related projects.
